Our fourth graders enjoyed a grand finale as they concluded a year of studying our golden state. Columbia State Park was their destination, where they visited Columbia Diggins, a reenacted tent town of the Gold Rush era. Activities included mining demonstrations, theater performances, bakery and laundry “businesses,” boarding house and lots more. The event continues through the weekend. Entrance is $5 for adults, $1 for children.
Our "Maker" garage has been a busy place all year. Students have been able to participate in monthly "Project of the Month" sessions, and were able to showcase their learning in our first Mini Maker Faire this week. Take a peek below at some of the activities, and if you want further information, refer to our STEM webpage, or one of many articles that can be found online, such as this one from "We are Teachers".
What a treat it was to have "Ole Bess" stop by this week to share her stories and experiences with our students! She invited some of our parents, students and teachers to join her as she taught about slavery in the Revolutionary War era.
On Saturday, May 9, Hickman Charter School's team of nine 7th and 8th grade students competed against other Stanislaus County Schools in the 2015 Math Superbowl at Modesto Junior College. Our Bomb Team took home a hard earned honorable mention, and Ellis Capp was awarded a 2nd place trophy in the Geometry Bomb as well as an honorable mention in the Geometry Huddle. What a fun day of competitive math!
The campers have returned and once more the Turlock Lake campground is quiet, but what memories the students will have! We're sharing a few photos here, and you can find more on our Facebook page!
Every other year, Outdoor Education takes place for our 6th and 7th graders and their families. Next week, we'll converge on Turlock Lake, where the canopy of native riparian shrubs and trees along the shore provides the perfect backdrop for onsite environmental science instruction. Activities include orienteering, trail hiking, fishing, canoeing, along with a variety of classes. See our Outdoor Education webpage for details.
