History of our STEM Program
In 2012-13, HCS partnered with Justin W. Capp Engineering and Design to launch its Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics program. The program began with a Lego Robotics class where students learn design, build, and program robots. Students benefit from the presence of Engineers and Techs from JWC who teach the classes with the Hickman staff. Students learn STEM from engineering professionals.
In 2014, again with the help of Justin W. Capp Engineering and Design, HCS launched our STEM Maker Garage. Hickman's Maker Garage served as a space for young people and their families to learn and share their interests; where the lines between science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics blurred through students’ efforts to MAKE; a place where 21st Century Skills of critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity were valued equally with knowledge. In it flourished an environment of participatory learning where students could make mistakes and where learning took place at the individual pace of the participants.
With the completion of an extensive building project on our campus, our original Maker Garage has been replaced, and in the space where we originally launched our STEM activities now stands two well-equipped classrooms that we share with our Hickman Elementary and Middle School programs.
Persons/businesses in STEM related fields who might be interested in working with Hickman Charter can contact Paul Gardner to find out more information about our STEM program.
Our STEM program includes a variety of classes and workshops for all grade levels. View the spaces and sampling of activities in the gallery below (Click on images for further information about each one.) Use the links to explore the many opportunities available for our students.
