Within our Central Valley region are a number of places where wildlife is protected and available for public viewing. These “wetlands” are host to migratory species as well as those which are established as yearlong “residents” of our valley.
Pre Trip Explore some of the sites below, or research to find more information on your own. As a society we have become dependent on GPS-enabled navigation features. Before these conveniences entered our lives, maps were essential tools for travel. “Mapping” the various valley wetland areas on a physical map could be an interesting task for children who have little idea of such tools! Printed maps may be in short supply within our homes, but the internet is ready to come to the rescue with a huge collection of printable maps! Try to find one of our Central Valley area and “map” the wetlands! Be sure to print the Valley Wetlands Bingo Card! https://wildlife.ca.gov/lands/places-to-visit/los-banos-wa https://www.fws.gov/refuge/san_luis/ https://www.facebook.com/SanLuisNWRC/ https://www.fws.gov/Refuge/San_Joaquin_River/
On the Go Besides a map/GPS devise, the one piece of equipment that belongs on a Valley Wetland excursion is a pair of binoculars!!! Some site occasionally have visitor days where rangers set up spotting telescopes and binoculars for visitor use, but unless one is scheduled, bringing your own is the best assurance of viewing the many critters that call wetlands their home. And… waterproof footwear and a change of clothing might not be bad to load into the car! Don’t forget those photos and bingo cards!!
